How I work

These principles guide how I approach content design and technical writing—and what I look for in the teams I work with.
I design task-focus content to get users to the finish line
Every word should help someone complete a task. If it doesn't move them forward, it goes.
Collaboration builds better content
Great content comes from working closely with others—designers, researchers, developers, policy teams, and subject matter experts. I build trust, ask the right questions, and make space for others to shape the work with me.
Content needs diverse perspectives
Diverse perspectives help content work for more people. I design with inclusion in mind—because if someone can't complete a task, we've missed the point.
Understand the material deeply—or know who to ask
Whether I'm explaining a tax calculation or documenting a complex API, I get to grips with the detail. If I don't know something, I find someone who does. Clear, accurate content depends on deep understanding.
Writing is designing
I treat content like a prototype. I test, rewrite, and refine until users can complete their task confidently.
Clarity comes from critique
I value honest, constructive feedback. I align on what 'good' looks like and regularly sharpen my thinking through critique with my team and the design community. Clear content is a team sport.
Balance precision with possibility
I can ship. I can dream. I'm comfortable working within constraints, but I also push for better ways of doing things. Content should be accurate, usable—and sometimes transformative.
Put users first—always
I work to make services understandable, accessible, and inclusive. That means prioritising user needs over organisational complexity, and making the case for plain language—even when it's unpopular.
Design for impact, not just output
I want content to shape how people experience services—not just read them. That means helping users complete tasks and helping the organisation meet its goals.
I design content that supports business outcomes by making services easier to use, reducing support needs, and building trust.
Humanise the technical
Whether it's a step-by-step guide or API documentation, I aim to make complex information approachable.
I work with user researchers to understand pain points, and I tell clear, coherent stories that make things make sense.
Care about the details
I obsess over word choices, headings, error messages, and formatting. Users notice when content is thoughtful—and they feel it when it isn't. Small things build trust.
